Tennis-"kenner" Marcella Mesker in Studio Sport over Maria Sharapova: "Ze komt uit Siberië, vlakbij Tsjernobyl."
Sorry? Tsjernobyl ligt in de Oekraïne, dat is ettelijke duizenden kilometers de andere kant op. Blijkbaar haalde Marcella Mesker wat dingen door elkaar.
When Sharapova's mother, Yelena, was pregnant with Maria, one of the reactors at Chernobyl exploded. The family fled to the industrial city of Nyagan in western Siberia, where Yelena's parents were living in a one-bedroom apartment and where Yuri found work in the oil fields. Maria was born there.
At least it was thousands of miles from Chernobyl, but the Sharapovs remained in Siberia only until Maria was 2, when they moved with their only child to the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi.
